The Faculty Conference is an annual event hosted by HCC's Faculty Senate Professional Development & Conferences Committee. It is open to all HCC employees, is free, and optional. Breakfast and lunch are included.

We will be discussing our Multidisciplinary project, across multiple disciplines (Biology, History, Pastry). Students are placed in teams and they compete using a presentation, having the Pastry student creating a dish, and the others talk about the concepts from their discipline while the pastry is being made. Escape the Classroom

The West Houston Institute houses a classroom turned Escape Room. Participants answer content questions (discipline-specific, HCC-related, etc.) and solves puzzles that give them a series of codes to locks and instructions on how to unlock the final box. Come and see how game-based learning in the escape room can meet learning objectives and increase engagement.

Faculty Academy: Experimenting with Ungrading

In this workshop, using my 2021-2022 classes as examples, we will examine the triumphs and tribulations of ungrading. Allowing students to provide their own grades turns them into the subject, their work into objects, and frees both the student and the instructor to focus on learning.

Last week our country witnessed the largest bank collapse since the 2008 financial crisis with Silicon Valley Bank being taken into receivership. In the wake of this failure other banks have failed as well or are showing signs of stress. Every year the Faculty Senate's Compensation, Workload and Benefits committee compiles a compensation analysis of HCC and comparable community colleges in Texas. This session will cover the 2023 report on the status of HCC compensation scheme.
